For security, it is better to completely clean up all data in the computers, notebooks, USB drives or other storing devices before you sell it or throwing away. If you simply press delete botton or click the “format” the devices, it is still possible for someone with the right tools to retrieve data on the drive.
So you need a lower level (computer like) format method, ie using a utility tool that can overwrite every sector of the hard drive with binary 1s and 0s. We call this process “wipe”. Some softwares can be easily downloaded or purchased online like KillDisk, WipeDrive, and DataEraser. They are not expensive and some provides free version. Just follow the instructions of that particular tool. Wiping duration depends on the storage size.
Usually one attempt is enough, of course you can try several times if you think the data is highly sensitive.
