Steps on how to Flash Any Nokia GSM phone Firmware using JAF and Navifirm
I have spent the past three days learning how to flash my new Nokia 5230 with the latest firmware. The reason was that I want to change the default language, and Nokia is limiting the number of available languages in each “firmware package”. Flashing Nokia phone is not something easy to do if you are learning from scratch. However, I’ll share my experience and the steps and hopefully you will get better ideas on what to do. Just FYI, you can also use the same set of tools to unlock your Nokia phone.

Nokia Software Updater (NSU) is good for updating your firmware when the package is released for your particular region. Very often, for example, Nokia would release a new version first in Europe. If you live in North America, you can wait, or you can flash your firmware with European package with the method below.
Anyway, here are the tools you need:
1. Navifirm – This tool allows you to download the firmware package of your choice.
2. JAF – This tool does the actual flashing or unlocking of your phone.
3. Nokia Software Updater (NSU)
4. Virtual PKEY
You can google these two software and download the latest version. Navifirm is great. JAF is tricky and unstable. The most stable version I found so far is 1.98.62.
Obviously, you also need a USB cable connecting your phone to your computer.
Here are the steps and overview:
1. Install NSU. This should be straightforward.
2. Use Navifirm to get the firmware package you need. Make sure you use only the ones that is compatible with your phone otherwise you will kill your phone. Place the downloaded package in the following directory:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\DataPackage\Products\RM-XXX\Note: replace XXX with the actual number of the package that you chose to download. For example, RM-588 is for Nokia 5230 Asian version.3. Install JAF 1.98.62.
4. Startup Virtual PKEY, and start JAF through Virtual PKEY.
5. Turn off your Nokia phone. Connect the phone to your computer.
5. In JAF, go to BB5 tab.
6. Check “Manual Flash”, Dead USB”, “Factory Set”, “Use INI”. Wait for 5 seconds, and you’ll see a window where you can select your firmware package.
7. After selecting the package of your choice (which matches the one you downloaded), click on the FLASH button.
8. As soon as you see the message that tells you to start your phone, press the power on button on your Nokia phone.
9 It will take about 10 – 20 minutes to flash your phone. Be patient.
