1. Click the SmartArt graphic that you want to animate.
2. On the Animations tab, in the Animations group, select By branch one by one or By level one by one.
3. On the Animations tab, in the Animations group, click Custom Animation.
4. In the Custom Animation list (Custom Animation list: The list of animation sequences for a slide. Items are listed in the order in which they are added, and include icons that indicate timing in relation to other animation events.), click the expand chevron Expand chevron to display all of the shapes in your SmartArt graphic.
5. In the Custom Animation list, select all of the shapes that you don't want to animate, by holding down the CTRL key and clicking each shape in turn.
6. Click Remove. This removes the animation effect from the shape. It doesn't remove the shape itself from your SmartArt graphic.
7. For each remaining shape, select the exact animation options that you want by selecting the shape in the Custom Animation list, and then either right-clicking the shape or clicking Change.
8. When you've finished selecting the animation options that you want, close the Custom Animation pane.
