  One way to install new programs on Ubuntu is through the Synaptic Package Manager (Main Menu -> System -> Administration). All you do is right click the program you want to install, select install this package, press ok to any additional packages it needs, then press apply to install them. There are over 20,000 packages in Synaptic that are available to you for free.
